NORMANDY
Naval guns bombardment, shattering the dawn sky,
Whistling of shells falling, and exploding close by,
Landing crafts overloaded, struggling towards the beach,
The "Enemy" guns retaliating, but stay well out of reach.
The battle for the "Liberation of Europe" is now on,
Landing at "Sur-Mer" thought "Bayeaux" and on to "Caen!"
This was the objective attained on the first day,
They could have gone on, but they had to stay.
The order to "DIG IN" came as no surprise,
For it was the beachhead, we had to stabilise,
This took to long to "Consolidate" we were informed,
Plenty of time for the "ENEMY" to reinforce and reform.
They attack with "TANKS" at and near the "BOCCAGH" village,
Infantry men against tanks, the carnage could not be envisage
Infantry men fired, some from the hip the P.I.A.T. their "ANTI TANK" guns
For their gallantry many medals, including 3. V.C,s were won.
Through lush valleys where herds of horses grazed, we carried on, Liberating many
farms, villages, and town, like MEZIDOM,.
Until one day as we approach a town on the River Orme
Increase troop movement gathered for the impending storm,
Two magnetic forces struck like lightning with all their might,
Shells rained down. Thunderous explosions filled that horrendous night,
After "Battle" was over I marched though the "FALLAISE GAP"
Wearing a bandage under a beret, slinging my" HOLDED" tin hat.
To the memory of those in foreign soil at eternal rest reside,
Those who were crippled, disabled, and others still alive,
I SALUTE THEIR COURAGE AND GALLANTRY by dedicating this rhyme,
I AM PROUD TO ACKNOWLEDGE "FRIENDS" I KNEW ONCE UPON A TIME.
