Probably not an original story, but my mother told me that when nylon stockings weren't available, she coloured her legs with gravy browning.
What gave her an advantage over the other girls though, was that my grandfather was a skilled coach painter and he painted on the 'seams'. After painting the coach lines by hand on Sunbeam cars, simulated seams on my mother's legs were no problem for him.
