We all know that there were shortages during the war, but did you know that you even had to take your own paper to get fish and chips.
It was always a favourite tale of my mother's that it was a great treat to go to the cinema and get fish and chips on the way home.
One night, she was watching the film with her sister when she realised she had forgotten something. The film soundtrack was very loud, so when she leaned across to tell my aunt she had to virtually shout.
Unfortunately, at that moment the music reached a quiet passage, so the entire cinema heard the frantic message, 'Cath, we haven't got any paper for the fish and chips'.
