I was flying a Boston photo reconaisance aircraft returning from Cherbourg to photograph an American bombing raid on Cherbourg Harbour when sudenly my co-pilot and I were sitting in a dingy in the sea.
We had been shot down by an american fighter who reckoned he did not recognise us (an American aircraft0 We were drifting in a westerly wind towards the enemy coast, then we heard the noise of a boat engine. We were convinced that it was an enemy craft but in the event it turned out to be a British Air Sea Rescue boat They eventually landed us on Paignton beach in front of all the holiday makers wwho thought we were Germans and were not very kind to us.
I suffered a bullet wound to my hand and abullt through my thigh.
