Age Concern Salford: Then and Now — Remembering and Celebrating

Age Concern Salford has been fortunate in receiving funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake a memory gathering project. The project has two main strands; firstly to capture and record memories of the War before they are lost from living memory and secondly to contribute to the events and exhibitions around the city to commemorate the end of World War II.

2005 is the 60th anniversary of VE Day and so there are lots of events across Salford to remember this. Age Concern Salford thought that this year would be a great opportunity to focus on gathering the memories of people in our community and capturing them so that they can be shared by others today and in the future.

We already have a list of over 100 people who have memories to share and well over half of these are now on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ People’s War website or have been recorded onto mini disc. We also have a group of volunteers who have been trained to gather memories and we are working with a number of schools in the city to bring children and older people together to share thoughts and memories of the war. We are keen to get more volunteers involved in the project, especially young people.

It is great fun. You will learn new skills, such as interviewing skills, how to use mini-disc players and how to input information onto the internet. You also get the chance to meet new people and to feel great about the fact that you are helping others. No experience is needed, training will be given. A positive approach and an interest in other people are essential!

This may be the last chance we have to capture and record these precious and fascinating memories so if you would like to help us to record someone’s memory then please contact Age Concern Salford on 0161 788 7300.
