School days in Woking
The author of this story has agreed that it can be entered on this ´óÏó´«Ã½ site
11 years old when war broke out and was a pupil at Goldsworth Central School. School closed down because of the war and I attended classes in church halls (weren’t allowed large congregations of people) around Woking.
I remember one day we heard machine gun from a plane overhead — appeared to be firing at the school yard (we were now back at Goldsworth School). Terrifying experience, running for cover. No-one was hurt but stuck in my mind.
Lots of evacuees from London — pupils and teachers! We were taught by own teachers and evacuated teachers such as Mr Redhouse.
When I was 14, I left school and volunteered for firewatching: in Woking town centre. As youngest members (me and my schoolfriend) of the team, we acted as runners and have fond memories of the cellar of the Rendezvous Restaurant.
Woking not bombed very ofter but I remember one bomb which fell on Chertsey Road, destroying one building. I remember the search lights and windows in our house breaking. (13 years of age).
