This is a story by Gladys Marshall from Kent who was in the WAAF. She was a cook in the sergeants' mess. In spare moments from cooking for the pilots, she would be knitting for them. There was also, of course, a very good social life with dances, shows, etc.

Official Knitting Directions.
Two oz 4-ply fingering Royal Air Force Blue, or nearest colour.
Four needles, size No. 7.
Cast on 96 stitches. Knit 2, purl 2 for 5 inches, then proceed as follows:
Knit 2, purl 2 for 24 stitches. Place these on a piece of wool or stitch-holder, for the face.
Work 56 rows of plain knitting on the remaining 72 stitches. Then knit 47, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over and turn.
Knit 23, slip 1, knit 1 slip stitch over and turn.
Repeat 2nd row until all stitches are worked on the needle (24 stitches).
Knit 24 stitches, pick up 28 for right side of face. Knit 2, purl 2 for chin. For left side of face, pick up 28 stitches. There should be 104 stitches in all. Knit 2, purl 2 on these stitches for 12 rows. Cast off in the usual way.
