Glider Pilot
My Dad, Sydney Thomas Edmunds was a glider pilot during WW2 but never talked about it. My Mum said he lost many friends.
He joined The Welch Rgt in 1943 from the Metropolitan Police. He was sent for training to The Artists Rifles then OCTU in Tring and ended up as a 2nd Lieut in No1 Wing GPR.
During his training on The Brecon Beacons, he had to scavenge for food while out for days in the cold, snowy weather. One day the ground was so hard with cold that he couldn't dig for food. There was a small farm nearby and he knocked on the door. A woman answered and quickly handed him a couple of fresh eggs she'd just collected. Dad was so grateful that he asked if he could do something for her. The woman thought and then asked him if his wife used hairpins. "No but I'll get you some".
A few weeks later, my mum having scoured the centre of London, Dad delivered 2 packets of precious hairpins and received another egg.
