I was in the WAAFS, as an ambulance driver. I was in Dover on D-Day. We were very busy, because we used to get shells from across the Channel. We used to get shelled every time the Germans got fed up, they could take it out on us over on the other side, or if a convoy went across the Channel. Like everyone else, we just did as we were told, and got on with it. Yes I saw a good bit of action but in the main it was very good fun - I enjoyed being in the WAAFS immensely.
I met my husband down there- we got married. He was in the Air Force too.
My best memories were the company, and the comradeship of being in the Forces. My worst memory was when I was caught under shell fire and the medical officer was killed. I was fortunate, I was only injured, ended up in hospital, but at least I was still alive.
