I was evacuated to Colchester during the war and at my school we had a shelter that we would go to when we heard the air-raid siren, we would have to quickly put on our gas masks and make our way down. Sometimes when I would wake up in the mornings I would see smoke from the night before. When I went back home to the East-End of London I saw bulidings that because they were so solid had just had their rooftops blown off. Everything was poverty stricken and we didn't have any consumer goods like we are used to now. I had "blakey's" put on my shoes tp make them last longer and they would be really noisy as I walked down the road. My first visit to the sweet shop after rations finished was fantastic.
