It was sometime in 1941, and the air raid sirens went, which had been quite a frequent event. My father was not at home, but my mother, brother and myself, did what was by then routine. We donned our "Siren Suits" and got ourselves comfortable under the stairs. Mother went from time to time to both the front door and the back door, and on one occasion she came from the front to the back and informed a Warden that "Janette's" a dress shop on Church Street was on fire His reply was, "never mind Janette's Mrs. there is one on your roof, so get out now to the shelter" He then escorted us to the shelter in Birkdale Road. There was no incendary on our roof, but afterwards we were told that something had landed further along the row. On going out I remember seeing a house in Cross Street, with the upstairs window open, and a mattress was being thrown out. I remember the shelter, an above ground brick built one, which smelt horrible and damp. We never went into that shelter again.
