Betty was just a young girl when she went to live with her grandparents out in the country. Rathcool was, then, a very small rural area during the war years and her parents thought it safer than the city. Her grandparents and relatives lived in the British Legion House and were friendly with a local farmer. The farmer gave permission for her uncles to build and underground air raid shelter under a bushy area of the farm. An uncle, who'd been disabled, designed a water wheel, which another uncle constructed, and they generated electricity and power from a nearby stream. They used this to light the underground shelter and with a built in fire place Betty said it was very comfortable
