It seemed like a great adventure. The bombing in Bristol had been very intense and the Good Friday raid was too close for comfort. The pub at the end of our road received a direct hit and three people and one girl were killed. Night after night we were spending time in the shelter in the garden. My mother decided I would be safer away so suggested I went to Cornwall. Within a few weeks I was on my way with hundreds of others from Bedminster Station. It seemed like a great adventure I had never been further than Paignton and that was only once. We took much longer getting there than was anticipated as Plymouth had been bombed the night before and the railway line was damaged. Marjorie and I were eventually billeted with a family in a large house in an exclusive park. It was not long before my room mate was moved as she was very unhappy. After a while a teacher at school asked if I would like to move in with her. Miss Saint and her mother were fantastic and I really loved living with them. Unfotunately my mothers health was deteriorating and I had to come home. Luckily the air raids were not so frequent but sadly my mother died soon afterwards.
