During my training period at Barnard Castle
I was also a projectionist in the camp cinema, on this particular night we had the usual full house and were just about to start the performance, the house lights were dimmed the recorded music faded, and the projector started, then disaster! the image never reached the screen, a greasy smear had coated the glass porthole, and there was just a glare of light, unfortunately when the cinema was built they had made the glass a fixture, normally these do lift out for cleaning,we brought up the house lights and I had to go down to the auditorium armed with cleaning materials to correct this, this entailed asking the patrons occupying the seats at the back who were mainly officers, to permit me to stand on the seat backs and clean the glass, I think just about every one there was was eyeing me and it was a little uncomfortable at the time, after cleaning up I quickly made my exit and the show went on without further incident.
