My younger brother was in Hospital having an operation and the Police came to take my parents to see him as it was thought he was dying ( he didn't )

I was sent to my friend in Cannon St., Bernard,
to play. We were on the street when a plane flew over very low and we could see the pilot, we waved at him and he waved back. More, bigger, planes flew past at a much higher altitude. We thought we had waved to a Spitfire pilot, we found out later that it was a German plane being chased by the R.A.F.
They didn't want to shoot him down over populated areas and, apparently, stayed with him until he was over the sea before they shot him.
When I heard the ending I felt sorry for that pilot, who probably waved to us because he had a son at home around the same age.
