At the outbreak of the Second World War I lived at 8 Cowper Close, Bexley Heath, Kent with Mum, Dad and five brothers and one sister. We had numerous air raids and spent nights in the shelters. Our road often has close calls up till January 1941.
Due to blast damage we were taken to an assembly point, and put on a train to Shropshire, at this time dad was already at Donnington, Shropshire helping to set up the Ministry of Defence Depot.
My brother Peter was in the RAF, David and Michael were in the army.
Mum, Gordon, Colin and Janette and I arrived at Newport station at night during a snow storm.
A friend of dad鈥檚 got us digs in Newport high street, when we woke in the morning we discovered we had slept in the shop window.
In April 1941 we obtained the key to 26 Tarreff Avenue, Donnington and we settled there. The war carried on until 1945.
