Lance Corporal Alexander Barr 193 Field Ambulance RASC who was a Grocer in Civilian life before and after the war.
THE GROCER鈥橲 LAMENT
We have no eggs today, we鈥檙e very sad to say
We鈥檙e short of ham, we鈥檝e got no jam
And the syrup鈥檚 all away.
We do our best to please, we鈥檝e got a little cheese
And though we鈥檙e out of onions, we鈥檝e some fine progressive bunions
But we鈥檝e really no green peas.
Now Madam, did you st鈥tutter, that you鈥檇 like a p鈥ound of b鈥utter?
Well for your information, you鈥檝e had your this week鈥檚 ration
And it does no good to mutter.
Our Nestle鈥檚 milk鈥檚 for nursing mothers, we鈥檝e none for sale to any others
We鈥檙e sorry, but we have to say
Your nursing days are far away.
We鈥檝e just run out of pork and beans, we can鈥檛 get any more from Heinz
Though that鈥檚 a thing we got-a-lot-a,
We don鈥檛 get much now, just a quota.
鈥楾is pretty tough I must agree, but our Berlin branch is worse, you see
The R.A.F.鈥檚 been over there, their stock went right up in the air
A fact to hail with glee!
You can blame it all on Hit and Muss, they鈥檙e the lads you ought to cuss
Don鈥檛 blame the folk whose job鈥檚 to serve, if you do, you鈥檝e got an awful nerve
鈥楥os we might be a whole lot worse.
Before I stop, there鈥檚 one thing more, something I really do deplore
I know we鈥檙e short of lots of things, but we鈥檝e plenty forms, yes, by jings
We鈥檝e got to write them day by day, for which we get no extra pay
Not even thanks it brings.
And now you鈥檝e heard this sad, sad tale,
Don鈥檛 you think the grocer would be better in jail?!
