I am the daughter of the late Lance Corporal Alexander Barr who served with the Royal Army Service Corps 193 Field Ambulance from August 1941 to January 1946. Some of his poetry was written while he was stationed at various isolated rural districts of England before being sent to France and Germany, and in his own words he said about his poems, "If they serve no other end, they have helped to while away many a weary hour, and save me from utter melancholy." He died from Parkinson's disease in 1962 at the age of only 50 when I was 15 years old.
