This story has been added to the People's War website on behalf of Mrs Steers. Mrs Steers has given permission and understands the site's terms and conditions.

The war broke out when I was 15. I lived in London during the bombing and went to work in the Co-op. I saw the docks on fire and then when I was 18 I joined the WAAF and trained in Bedford.

I鈥檇 met my husband at the age of 14 - he worked as a draughtsmen for the M.o.S. and M.A.P. After we got married I was transferred to Bomber Command, High Wycombe and from there I was eventually demobbed.

We have now celebrated our diamond wedding with congratulations from the Queen.
