My father Jack Harding Wilkins was born in Kempston Beds, in 1921. Once old enough he joined the local division of the territorial army, the Beds and Herts. When war was declared they made their way to Norfolk and were set to guarding the North Nofolk coast, as part of the 18th Division. Later they were based at Haveringland hall and whilst there he met my mother. Once hostilities began in earnest he and his comrades were sent up to Glasgow to embark as they were told for Greenland. However once at sea they were told that they were off to defend Singapore. The convoy was guarded in the Pacific by the American Navy. He was to spend his war in captivity building the infamoue 'Railway of Death'.Fortunately he returned to England and back to Norfolk.

Message 1 - Removed from Editorial Desk

Posted on: 05 August 2003 by Deborah - WW2 Team

Hi there Helen,

Thanks very much for submitting this article to the Editorial Desk. You'll notice that I have removed it from the Desk, but I have not edited and categorised it.

You give a tantalising outline of your father's war service, but we would love to hear more! In particular, do you have any stories from his time building the 'Railway of Death'? We haven't yet had any detailed contributions about this harrowing part of war history. Perhaps you could submit it as a separate story?

Let me know what you think.

Best wishes
Deborah
