My father who passed away sometime ago use to tell me different story's from his time in the war. I was told some of them many times over. Since he passed away i have had his service medals put in a display cabinet, and have thought for many years of writing some of these memories down. Where to start, my father worked for Boots in Nottingham before he was called up, and lived near Nottingham. But the story's are mainly about his times of being shipwrecked three times. He was originally in the Royal navy but ended up in the Merchant Navy. Has anybody got any basic ideas of where to start as there is so much for me to work on?

Message 1 - Getting started.

Posted on: 10 December 2003 by Frank Mee Researcher 241911

Hello Shirley,
Having had a bit of a huha over posting on this site and what is really allowed, it comes down so I was told to any happenings between 1939 -1945. The peoples war is for everybody, people like yourself who are passing on stories told to them, people like me a boy of 10.1/2 to 16, People who took part as war workers forces and any other role they played.
So if I may suggest a way from my own experience, I have quite a bit on here if you care to look, just click on my name and the page comes up about me and anything I have written, quite boring because as I said I was a kid.
Write some notes on a pad starting at the beginning of the war. Formulate a story with a beginning (explanation of where when and why) then give us the story as you heard it, just check dates yourself as we do tend to forget and mix them me too. Then a nice ending to the story or not which ever it was.
You cannot cover the war with one story so write headings for future stories and make it a digest of short stories of the life of your loved one. In reality you will be giving us that life story in what these days is called sound bites but there is no hold on how many words you use for any story you write. It can be one paragraph to ten thousand words, its your story your words and as you heard or saw it.
Get in there and write Shirley we want to know.
If you go to the left side of the page written in white on green you find Contribute. Under this is Personal Story. Click on and follow the instructions of who where etc; when finished you will find two buttons at the bottom. "Preview" which gives you how the story will look when sent off. I find all my mistakes then. To alter or edit your story go to the arrow on the top task bar that says back. This takes you back to the original text which you can then peruse and alter. This can be done as many times as you like. You cannot alter the text whilst in "Preview" mode.
Then go to the button that says "Save" and click. This saves your story and it will come up as the printed story you have then to look for the button on that page that says send to "Editorial Desk". this is where some people go wrong but dont worry your story is saved and you get used to doing it all as I did.
I hope this will help and encourage you to post your stories we need everything to be told about those strange frightening and sometimes very happy times.
Regards Frank Mee.
