German Bombers over Craster
I have lived in Craster for 70 years and during the war I lived opposite the sea.
We used to watch the German bombers come in across the sea, because Dunstanborough Castle was a landmark. We saw them drop bombs on Radcliffe along the coast, they set the place on fire.
They used to come across the sea and drop their bombs at the farms at Craster. You can still see the crater at West Farm.
I think they were looking for RAF Acklington down the coast, or the radar post at Boulmer. At Boulmer they had dummy aircraft to make it look like RAF Acklington.
I went to seek some water at the rain barrel one day and I didn't know they were there - and they machine-gunned at me but they missed. They also shot at a man in the street but missed him too.The bullets made a circle around him in the dirt. The man said he didn't know how they missed him!
