My husband Harold Burgoyne came from Kilburn and worked for the railway at Derby, where he was a fitter. After we were married he got called up into the army, into the Grenadier Guards, he did his training just outside London in 1944. He had difficulty with his feet and it was confirmed by a medical officer that he would not be able to march. He was then given the position of guarding some of the Palaces in London Whitehall, Chequers and Downing Street. Which was quite dangerous as London was constantly bombed. At the end of the war, Harold returned to Holbrook and back to the railways as a fitter as they had kept his job open and was paid a retainment fee whilst serving.
