My husband Matthew George Killingbeck was stationed at Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire with Number 10 Squadron Halifax Bombers.
My daughter and myself went to stay whilst he was there at the Crown Inn. When he was out on a raid I would help in the bar and one day a coach load of men called in for a drink and in the course of the conversation they said they had come from Castleford and my husband played for Castleford Rugby League Club before joining up. They said they would like to see him but he had been on a raid the night before and was in bed, so they said they would call back from Richmond which they did and everyone had a great time.
He was called up in September 1940 his last trip when he never came back was 8th May 1942, he was 30 years old.
He is buried in the Berlin War Cemetery which is very well cared for. I went over in 1985.
