I remember very well the day that war was declared. It was 3rd September, 1939 - a Sunday. I was eight years old and staying in Edinburgh with my Granny. At 11a.m. the Prime Minister was to speak on the radio (then called the wireless). During the broadcast he stated that Britain was now at war with Germany. When the broadcast was over the sirens sounded and my Granny made all the family put on their gas masks, which had been issued to everyone sometime earlier. In due course the "all clear" was sounded at which point Granny allowed us to remove our gas masks!
