As a young woman in Holbrook I can remember there being quite a lot of soldiers in the village. They took over the village hall, the chapel schoolroom and the convalescent home. Occasionally one or two would come to our house for a meal. We kept in contact with one of them - George Thompson - until he died a few years ago.

There were also some evacuees in the village. They came from Southend and the surrounding area...My aunty had the supervisor - Mrs Crow - and her two sons staying with her. After the war we kept in touch and had some holidays in Southend!
