GNR George Leslie Oldfield R.A. 1760989
I was born in Bishop Auckland Co Durham on August 30th 1916. I lived with my parents, Thomas Herbert and Edith Annie Oldfield my brothers, Ray, Ken and Albert and sisters Cis (Judith) and Pearl.
In the 1930's we moved down to Jacksdale in Nottinghamshire to work for the Butterley Company at Codnor Park in Derbyshire.
In 1940, after war had started I was called up to Buxton to begin my training in the Royal Artillery. I was then sent to Driffield then on to Blandford for more hard training then on to Ireland for 'gun ack ack ' harder training. I then began my duty as a gunner, sometimes sitting on the actual gun seat, listening for enemy aircraft. I then had to fire. Then I was sent (always with my mob) to Driffield then on to Catterick, France and Holland some of the lads were blown up and it did upset my nerves but I never gave up, then it was D D ay. It was rough going but the lord was good, I came through it ok. I was demobbed on 6th July 1946.
