I was posted to Berrington Hall as a VAD ( Voluntary Aid Detachment )from Leominster, when it was commandeered as a forces convalescent home. Lady Vivienne Cawley was the lady of the house and also the Red Cross Commandant.
She was strict but fair.
I left Berrington on the morning of D Day for the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas鈥檚 Hospital in London to take my nurses training. The old matron at Berrington said 鈥 There you are leaving us just when we need you鈥, which made me feel very guilty.
I qualified in 1948. I nursed Princess Arthur of Connaught at her home in Hampstead and at the same time George VI th was being nursed by three Nightingale sisters and every day the Princess teased me saying 鈥淲ell they haven鈥檛 killed him yet !鈥
I then got engaged and went out to Malaya via Australia to marry my husband who was MO to the 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards.
