120 Co. Pioneer Corp. No. 13058417
I was called up in June, 1940 where I joined the Auxillary Military Pioneer Corps. AMPC. It later became known as the Pioneer Corps and then the Royal Pioneer Corps. Our C.O. was a Russian named Major T. Tchapline who had managed to get out of Russia during the Revolution . He ended up on the British general staff. I spent two and a half years building defences in the Shetland Islands in case of an invasion from Norway. In June, 1944 on D-Day plus 2 we landed at 8.30 a.m. on Arromanches beach. We made our way through Caen, Paris and stayed at a small village in Mol, Belgium. We then went on to Luneberg Heath stopping in Hanover. In June/July, 1945, as I was a Clerk, I was moved to another Unit where I was responsible for all the Demob papers. This Unit was sent back home and we were due to be shipped out to India, but that didn鈥檛 happen as there was a strike at Grimsby Docks. I was finally demobbed in September, 1945.
