Stealing from the Germans hinders joining British Forces
Gerald Allen
My brother Gerald 13 yrs was with mum & sister & Uncle Art in Guernsey during war, Gerald & his friend raided the German food store & stole a lot of tins corn beef which they gave away. They were caught and had to go to Prison. But when Guernsey was free Gerald was the only one who hadn鈥檛 been in the War. So he wanted to join up. He tried Royal Navy, they asked if he had been in prison & what for, then said no, they could not take him. So then he tried Army, they asked the same, Have you been in prison. So when he said yes, owing to stealing from the Germans, they said same thing, can鈥檛 take you, but try the Air force, and when asked about prison, say no, & they accepted him. The day he signed up for 3 yrs. Next day war was over. But he had 3 yrs to do & really enjoyed it & travelled & after 5 yrs of war in Guernsey it did him good.
