I lied about my age and joined up the day before my 16th birthday, I should have been 18 years old.
I was in London during the war in 1942. There was a lot of bombing, Doodle Bugs were the worst as you didn鈥檛 know where they were going to be dropped. If you were on duty you couldn鈥檛 go to the air raid shelters you had to sit outside.
However there were some good times, like dancing to Jo Loss and Betty Driver. I remember being stationed at Eshott at a spitfire station, some of Glen Miller's band had to land through the bad weather. They were there for quite a few days and I can remember us having lovely dances whilst they were there.
My Brothers were at home working in the coalfields, they used to save up their ration coupons and when I went home on leave they would buy sweets as a treat.
