After the phoney war I was put to bed each night in an Anderson shelter at 6pm 鈥 my mother stayed there with me until the 鈥淎ll Clear鈥 next morning - (Dad was at Dunkirk)
During the raids we heard the whistle of bombs falling followed by the noise of bricks falling. From the shelter door we could see the reflection of flames in the windows of our own house.
One day while shopping we saw a German plane flying low over ICI Witton where Eley Kynoch ammunition was made- presumably a reconnaissance plane.
