Leave was precious, my husband was a Gunnery Officer in a cruiser, 鈥楻ussian Convoys鈥, we came up to London from Chatham, we stayed at the Savoy and went to the local Theatre.Half way through the play the air raid sirens sounded, the Manager told us 鈥 The play would continue, 5 minutes for any one who wished to leave for the shelter.鈥 Nobody seemed to wish to go! After the play was over we all left. All clear had not been given, we walked over glass etc towards the Savoy, suddenly my husband stopped and said 鈥 Oh God save St Paul鈥檚鈥 I looked left, the great dome of the Church stood against the sky, search lights played on it, planes circled round, German bombers, and smaller Spitfires guns blazing, the sons of this land defending the Great Church. The Gold Cross seemed to tower above, as young men died to destroy or protect this precious building. God did protect St Pauls.
