Deportation Party
Edited transcription from a taped interview with John De Jersey
Another little amusing thing, a chap Roy Machon was being deported, and his sister Barbara, put on a party, which was actually over at Frank Stroobant鈥檚 caf茅, and we had this party, and the band playing, and we were singing the national songs, and we had red, white, and blue trimmings in the room, and the German police broke in and relieved us of our identity cards with instructions that we had to collect them from Grange Lodge the next day, When we collected them, we had a 5 Deutschmark fine and six month deferred sentence in prison, which I didn鈥檛 tell them about when they caught me with the crystal set. Also in those days one of the best entertainments we had was dancing to Ernie Keyho鈥檚 band at Sunnycroft in the Grange. Ernie was very good. What a lot of people could not understand was the fact that all the new songs that were being heard on the radio in England or being played in England were known over here straight away. He did a good job with that.
