my dad arrived in italy in 1943, and was propmtly reminded that he was at war by the german stukas who bombed them. they made thier way into the countryside to a camp. here they got plastered on uzo before joining the war the next day. they were trucked to cassino. dad didnt talk alot about that battle,what he said was it was a terrible thing a 17 yearold had to see and live through. his company attacked a ss machinegun post ,75 walked away the rest dead or wounded. he lost several mates who didnt keep on running ,when they came under mortor attack. he saw rome fall to the canadians , only to have that victory taken away by the yanks, who claimed victory in rome.the canadians were almost rioting away from the ceremony!!
