This is a little story told me by my grandfather that fought during WW2 as private in "Regio Esercito" the Italian Army. After the capitulation on 1943 every unit was disbanded and every soldier was without a guide and a duty to follow;many of them were captured by Germans and sent to prisoner camps abroad, others joined the R.S.I.,continuing their war standing on Mussolini side and others, or formed new Liberation units, or took off their uniforms and tried to return to civilian life.
During the German offensive against Soviet Union, Mussolini sent some Divisions and my grandfather had to return home by walk from there after the Russian offensive and the fall of the defensive line.Once home he told me that for a few days was completely shocked and walked night and day on streets and woods until he was discovered by a German unit that was retreating toward the Austrian border.
He thought to be dead when after a quick interrogation the Germans on open field told him to escape, to run away their sight! My Grandfather told me: "I was sure that just after turned back my shoulder to them and after a few step they fired and killed me!"
He closed his eyes and run away as fast as he could as hearing the soldiers laughing...but no one opened fire and only when he reached the wood my grandfather realized to be still alive!!After a long walk he hearded a rumour and he saw an hungry German soldier that was asking for the right home and food!He was obviously lost! Then my grandPa, remembering the Germans that didn't open fire, gave a piece of bread that he kept on his pocket to the hungry soldier that thanks him so much!
This is just a little story but I'm sure that when everyone realize that is happened on real life, then I'm sure that can become a real one!
