When i signed up to join the army i was aboput 21-22. I went along to the local recruitment office. I didn't want to leave home but i knew it had to be done. I have always said that if the country is worth living in it is worth fighting for. I think my parents and fsamily were sad that i had to leave but they knew like I did that I had to go. I already had a job before i left but i didn't mind leaving it as I was going to experience something new and different.

When I arrived in my first placement I found it easy to make friends as everyone was in the same boat . They were all very friendly. I didn't feel very prepared to fight but you just had to go and fight. When i had my gun i thought it was great as i felt important. With my uniform on as well i felt very proud.
The food that we had to eat in the army was adequate. It wasn't the best i had tasted but it could have been worse. We often had very basic food and if we were lucky we had corned beef. What we ate really depended on what we had to do.
We had to sleep in ditches, trenches, bushes basically wherever we could.

We were allowed to send letters in the post but they had to be checked (censored) before they were sent for safety purposes. We could also recieve letters from out family which was nice.
I think i was first in Dunkirk and i was a dispatch worker.

On VE Day everyone felt very happy and most of us felt proud at what we had all fought for. There was celebrations but not proper ones because wew were in Italy. We did have a bit of a dance about though!
On the first Christmas i remember I spent it in Africa I had cold soup for my Christmas dinner!
