My father and mother would wake me up during any large raids. My father would tell me I was watching history in the making. I saw the bombing of Chelmsford in 1943, the large raids on Germany, and the gliders going over to, I assume, Holland. I remember watching dogfights overhead, doodlebugs, and tanks going down the road. There was a British Restaurant at the top of the road where you could get a dinner for 6d. At the end of the war I remember a bonfire in the pleasure pit at Oxney Green.
