I was seven when the war broke out and I can remember standing in the street and someone saying that war had been declared.

We had to take our gas masks to school and we were trained how to go into the shelter. We took two biscuits to school at the beginning of the war and they were put in a tin in case we had to go into the shelter. We ate our biscuits a couple of years later , there were no sell by dates in those days.

I hated going down into the dark dingy shelter. I don鈥檛 think there were any lights in it. We had to practice with our gas masks on too and I really didn鈥檛 like that.

We didn鈥檛 ever have to down for real - Thank Goodness.
