I remember when the bomb fell at the central library as we lived on the street beside the library, which was near the docks. We went to the Falls Road when the air raid sirens went off that day, before I was evacuated to Lurgan. The family that looked after us used to shout at us all the time. We got a surprise when we arrived and went up and to get dressed. We had big 鈥淒oc Martin鈥 boots and our frocks came all the way down to our boots, us wee girls! The woman who we stayed with had children and they always got a wee bit more than us. We weren鈥檛 allowed to fight with them. We occupied ourselves by going to the graveyard and stealing flowers to bring up in bunches for the woman who cared for us. She was nice enough but she wasn鈥檛 my mother. There were a lot of evacuees in Lurgan. While we were away, our house in Belfast was looted whenever we lived in the country.
