On my 10th birthday in June 1939 I was finishing my preparations for my birthday party I heard the first air raid siren go. I was so upset because I was really looking forward to my birthday party and reciving all of my preasents from all my friends but I knew it would all have to wait. I heard the siren at 6.35Pm and was given the all clear at 9.00Pm so I had missed my whole party and I was really, really upset about it. On the other hand I was quite exited that the first air raid took place on my birthday and I was having a mini party in my anderson shelter.(I had my party the very next day I was very happy and glad to have had 2 birthday parties and not just one)

Hello Researcher 231787,

And welcome to the site!

(By the way, you can tell us your real name by clicking on the link in the top right hand corner of the page that says My Details.)

Did you stay on Malta for the duration of the war? You must have lots more stories to tell!

Message 1 - Malta

You were obviously very young at the time but I'm sure you have lots of memories. Where did you live?

My father was working at the 45th General Hospital, a former school in the St Patrick's area from 1941 to 1944 and like you he saw history being made. You and he have a lot in common!

I'm particularly interested in the time in Setember 1943 when the Italian fleet came to Malta to surrender. Do you remember this? Did your parents or your friends hear or say anything to you about why they'd come or how they'd meet the British when they surrendered?

I'm still writing up my father's story but I'd love to hear more someone who shared his experiences.

paul
