Enrolled in the army in 1944 as a Sowar in a horsed cavalry. Got training at 3 centres at Lucknow, Babina and Ferozpur under Command Colonel H.M.Tallaq and colonel King. Then after passing training as a crew gunner operator in Sherman tank was posted in 8th King George V鈥檚 own light cavalry in Burma under allied services. I met with the present Queen in Leicester in 1994, the granddaughter of King George V who raised my unit. She was very happy to meet me.
My unit was having Stuart Tank and my commanding officer was Lt. Col. P.St. John Cox. My unit was serving under 17th infantry division at Meiktila. We re captured Burma from the Japanese. We captured so many Japanese as POW. They used to maintain our playground etc. They were thinking their king as a god. Japanese scarifying their life for example they use to climb on the branches of the trees standing on the roadside. They used to jump on our tanks and also threw hand grenades whenever we used to open up tanks and trying to kill the crew. Our unit was having 3 squadrons consisting of 1Sikh squadron, 1 Jat squadron and 1 Muslim squadron. I got transferred to AD Regiment.
Although I served under British until 1948, I continued serving in the army until 1973 and retired as a Lt.
My 2 sons were in the army. One as a Captain in Signals and second one as a Major in the artillery. He is a helicopter pilot also.
