I am one of four sisters who worked at Alfreton Hall, the home of the Squire of Alfreton, Mr. Palmer Moorwood, during the second world war.
I remember the house and all it's beautiful rooms. There were two large rooms near the main dining room, one had a big bear in the corner, he looked massive close up. This room was taken over by the army during the war and used as the officer's dining room.
The other room was a lounge for them. They used the conservatory for the cook house. From the entrance hall was the library, another room with a bar, then a playroom. All these rooms, the nursery, extra bedrooms for guests, were occupied by army officers.
The Princess Royal, the Queen's aunt, came to the Hall and had lunch in the officer's dining room. The batmen to the officers used to sleep above the conservatory. My future husband was one of them. Before the army took over the conservatory it was used to grow such luxuries as grapes, melons and peaches.
