Close to our school there was an AA gun and searchlight emplacement. The school air raid shelters were across the road at the side of the playing field. One morning there was the sudden sound of a low flying aircraftand the AA gun opened up. There had been no air raid warning and the teacher, Mr Ashford, shouted "Get under the desks". Many of us thought the explosions were bombs but he told us it was the gun firing. When we emerged many of the girls were crying, and I did'nt feel too happy either! Normally when the siren went we had time to get to the shelters, and if things were quiet we were allowed to sit out on the grass by the shelters until the "all clear" sounded.
