William Shutt lives in the New Wycliffe Home for the Blind, and was interviewed by Saima. It has been added to the website with his permission, and he understands the Terms and Conditions of the website.

William was a hydraulics engineer in the RAF. He was sent to Backhurst, a small town in West Africa, driving heavy load vehicles, and taking supplies to Yumdum airport. He had to drive around areas looking for landmines, making it safe to proceed.

He wasn’t injured, but after the war finished he had a job with the War Graves Offices, and had to spend time exhuming bodies and trying to identify them. Then they were given a ‘proper’ funeral. He said the smell was awful.
