During the early days of 1945 we were all huddled together in our Sherman Tank, the final mopping up operations were taking place, Rhine crossing Etc. Jim our main gunner a Londoner really did keep our moral up, although he perhaps did not realize it, he would come out with sudden bursts like
"Now we must away, for where these mortals are, us fairies cannot stay", I thought blimey, this blokes in charge of all the explosives on board!, but he was a good chap and well competent in his trade.
When hostilities ceased and we were obliged to obtain various commodities from the German civilian population, Jim was the interpreter, I can hear him now with his phrases, "Haben zee the frying pan bitter? and Haben zee the broom?,miming the actions.
His surname escapes me, I was pleased to have the privilege of his company, and if he's still around please communicate.
The cheerfulness he displayed greatly helped in those difficult times.
Ted Dann. 13/18th Royal Hussars.
