I had been married for just three months when war was declared. I was married 3rd of June 1939 and war was declared 3rd of September 1939.My husband worked at Jarmain's then so he got twelve months deferrment, but he was called up in 1940.Unfortunately he was a despatch rider and unfortunately he had an accident but it was a good job out of a bad one because he wasn't fit to move with his regiment, which he would have had to do-gone with the Eighth Army. So he was sent up to Scotland as officer's batman. Of course he liked Scotland very much. It's a good job I got to like it.Well, we had two children and overall I don't think we did too badly here-we'd just one air raid and it was nothing to call anything. I used to go to Nettleton Co-op and he was very fair was that man. He gave you a number and if a tin of salmon came in you got a tin of salmon in your turn. When you went to town you automatically looked at Marks and Spencers to see what they were queuing for, but my biggest bug bear was my daughter's shoes-she never had any shoes to her feet. When she got proper shoes it wasn't so bad but we got through and I don't think we've had a bad life. I think we were quite fortunate here.
