Huddersfield Local Studies Library became involved with the People's War in January 2004.We decided to offer monthly sessions where we invited the public to tell us their wartime stories.
Staff from the Local Studies and Reference Library participated in the sessions, taking notes, typing up stories and assisting users using the Internet, many of whom were using it for the first time.
The Community History Service have also assisted at the sessions, providing wartime material to help stimulate reminiscence.
The sessions have proved popular and we are now starting to roll out the programme to the smaller branch libraries in an attempt to reach a wider audience.
Since the summer we have held sessions at the following branch libraries:- Dewsbury, Lindley, Mirfield, Slaithwaite, New Mill, Holmfirth and Meltham. Staff at Huddersfield are now working on a display on the subject of the People's War.The sessions are proving popular and we are enjoying listening to some very interesting stories
