For weeks we as pupils of Chiltern Street School, Kingston-Upon-Hull, were marched around the playground with a cardboard box around our shoulders. Mum bought new clothes for me - 2 pairs of pants, 2 vests, socks etc and borrowed a battered small case to pack them in. A 'special' day arrived and I was dressed in a new red coat with black velvet collar, the cardboard box, which now contained a gas mask, and a luggage label that was attached to my buttonhole. We were herded onto a coach for the first leg of an adventure and extended education that lasted 6 years. I was a very lucky girl my new 'family' were a world apart from my old way of life in the city.
