Holywood Road Library was opened in 1942 due to Ballymacarrett Library being bombed in the Blitz.
The present new purpose built library - Holywood Arches - was opened in 1997 and with its curved roof reflects the former railway viaduct which gives the area its name.
In 1999 the building won the prestigious "Best Public Libraries Award".
The judges from the Public Libraries Group were impressed by the cultural links with the local community, particularly the author C. S. Lewis.
The author's life is commemorated with a bronze sculpture by Ross Wilson outside the library. The statue depicts Digory Kirke, C. S. Lewis' fictional alter ego, entering the kingdom of Narnia through the magic wardrobe.
The library provides many resources for the local community.
It contains 19,500 books(of which 4,500 are juvenile) there is a meeting room for local groups and adult classes. There is also a computer suite which is well used as internet facilities are free to library members. All our Branch Libraries have computers which can be used by members of the library. Becoming a member of the library is also free of charge - just bring along some identification with your name and address and fill in a form. If help is required in using the computer to record your story, our staff will be happy to arrange it, again free of charge.
The library is run by the Belfast Education and Library Board http://www.belb.org.uk which has 21 branch libraries in its district. Other local libraries are :-
